This Week
Hi folks, this week we are taking a look at the serious business of play. Contemporary artist David Hockney once said "people tend to forget that play is very serious". Our CEO Kerry Evans dives in to what exactly that means.
We also have the latest mental health news, exploring how loneliness is killing men, and doomscrolling is leading to despair , but ice cold water works miracles for depression.

The serious business of play
A few words from CEO Kerry Evans
Before becoming a therapist I worked in the financial sector alongside a bunch of ambitious investment bankers. They spent 80 to 100 hours a week working hard to amass the sort of money that would eventually buy them freedom and they planned on retiring early in great luxury to have FUN TIMES.
I saw many of them hang up their cuff links only to discover they were unable to enjoy the magnificent playgrounds they had invested in. Work had been stimulating and it was so central to their identity that giving it up represented a huge sacrifice. They knew how to compete but they had forgotten how to play.
Psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott emphasised the role of play in helping children come to terms with and navigate the complexities of the real world. He argued that play continues to be important for good mental health in adult life, and it was central to his work with clients young and old.
“Psychotherapy,” he wrote, “has to do with two people playing together. The corollary of this is that where playing is not possible then the work done by the therapist is directed towards bringing the patient from a state of not being able to play into a state of being able to play.”
Winnicott suggested play was a way of reaching the authentic, less-defended part of a person. Working with imagination, creativity, free association and dreams can all be considered forms of play in therapy.
More generally an attitude of playfulness can help clients explore new ideas and experiment with their lesser-known parts. This capacity can then be enjoyed in the outside world, bringing meaning, intimacy and joy.
My banker colleagues were motivated by the promise of freedom. But while money undeniably affords us options in life, what if freedom is found instead in knowing how to make use of them? And what if being able to play is key to that knowledge? Then play becomes an investment that pays dividends throughout life, and one that we can all afford.
